β€” Our Journey β€”

charting our path as we reach for the Spaceport America Cup

The team was founded in November 2018 by four students studying Aeronautical Engineering at the Imperial College London. Our primary goal is to put a team together to design and build a rocket to compete at the Spaceport America Cup in New Mexico (USA). The Spaceport America Cup (previously known as IREC) is the biggest intercollegiate rocketry competition in the world, which gathers passionate students from top universities from all around a world to compete against each other around a simple challenge: reach exactly a precise target apogee (altitude). The ICLR team is working hard on the design and construction of a 4-meter tall rocket that will tackle the challenge through a throttleable N2O-paraffin hybrid engine developed in-house.

Starting with very little knowledge in rocketry, the team developed several prototypes and subsystems in their first year, successfully lauching a High Powered Rocket (APOGEE) in March 2019, placing third at the UK CanSat Competition in April 2019, and wrapping up the year with a successful static fire of our first engine prototype (PABLO) in June 2019. Following a prosperous first year, ICLR has since then expanded into a team of more than 100 members, working harder than ever on SPORADIC IMPULSE, our competition rocket. Two advanced projects were also created, the drone-recovery project and the altitude record project.
